MNSBHC Legacy Fund Awards $50k Grant to Appetite for Change During 52 Weeks of Giving

MINNEAPOLIS – The Minnesota Super Bowl Host Committee (MNSBHC) Legacy Fund today awarded a $50,000 grant to Appetite For Change to support the organization’s mission of using food as a tool for building health, wealth and social change. The grant, provided by Newman’s Own Foundation, will benefit Appetite For Change’s social enterprise programs.

The MNSBHC aims to connect all Minnesotans to Super Bowl LII, extending the big game far beyond the Twin Cities borders and providing lasting impact far beyond the one-day game. The MNSBHC Legacy Fund’s 52 Week of Giving campaign is awarding 52 communities with grants over the course of the year leading up to Super Bowl LII to help improve the health and wellness of young people from all areas of Minnesota. The grant is part of the Super Bowl Legacy Grant Program, which is made possible each year by a $1 million contribution courtesy of the NFL Foundation, complemented by the Super Bowl Host Committee.

This week’s grantee, Appetite For Change, takes a holistic approach to lack of access to food, jobs and social connectedness through interconnected social enterprise programs. Its programs include cooking workshops, urban farming and job training in tandem with policy, systems and environmental change work to drive sustainable community development.

“We’re proud to be a champion for social justice in our community, and are so thankful for the Minnesota Super Bowl Host Committee and Newman’s Own Foundation for supporting our mission,” said Michelle Horovitz, co-founder and executive director, Appetite For Change. “Our food-based programs are creating opportunities for everyone from youth to adults to be agents of change in their own backyard.”

The Breaking Bread Café and Catering is one of Appetite For Change’s social enterprises. It increases healthy food access in North Minneapolis and creates jobs for individuals with barriers to employment. Its holistic training model combines culinary arts and food service management training with life skills and workforce readiness, to serve as a professional launch pad for North Minneapolis residents.

“Appetite for Change is doing wonderful work in the community around food access and job training,” said Kelly Giordano, Managing Director of Newman’s Own Foundation. “We are so happy to be able to support its mission, which is a square fit with our own focus on funding innovative nutrition programs.”

Today, the Breaking Bread Café hosted the MNSBHC Super Snack Challenge “All-Pro Chefs” cook-off. The 10 “All-Pro Chefs,” ages 8-14 years old were selected from more than 400 applicants and 52 Super Snack Challenge winners to make their recipes for celebrity judges. A panel of celebrity judges sampled the healthy snacks prepared by the young chefs, one of whom will be awarded the title of “Super Snack Challenge MVP,” to be announced during the Kids Tailgate Party. The Super Snack Challenge is supported by Newman’s Own Foundation.
