ALEXANDRIA, MN – The Minnesota Super Bowl Host Committee (MNSBHC) Legacy Fund today awarded Alexandria Area YMCA with a $50,650 grant to provide a fleet of 40 bikes and a trailer for kids in the community. The grant is part of the 52 Weeks of Giving campaign, a year-long effort to make Super Bowl LII a statewide event by awarding 52 communities with grants that will help improve the health and wellness of young people in Minnesota.

The YMCA is connected to the Central Lakes Trail, a great location for safe biking, walking and running without having to deal with cars or road traffic. In addition to a trailer and 30 bikes, the grant will also help the YMCA purchase reflective vests and helmets kids can wear for safety while riding. To celebrate the grant, students from local schools joined the MNSBHC today at event that included a bike rodeo. Students were taught important bike riding skills and safety techniques and precautions.

“Many children in Alexandria don’t own or have access to a reliable bicycle, but we know what a great activity bike-riding is for young people,” said Conrad Boston, President and CEO, Alexandria YMCA. “This MNSBHC Legacy Fund grant will help us teach kids to ride a bike and provide bikes as a resource to them – we hope this effort results in a life-long love of biking and all of great health benefits it brings.”

The project is a collaborative effort with Horizon Public Health. Alongside the Alexandria Area YMCA, these organizations will oversee routine repairs and annual maintenance on the bicycles.

“The efforts of the Alexandria Area YMCA will help improve the health and wellness of youth in Alexandria by making bicycling more accessible,” said Dana Nelson, Vice President of Legacy and Community Partnerships for the MNSBHC Legacy Fund. “We are so pleased to be here in Alexandria and to support the YMCA as it make this resource available to families and kids in Alexandria.”
